Certification Program

Conflict is everywhere in our families, our friendships, our churches, our jobs ...

Since conflict is so pervasive, the Reconciler Training Program is designed to equip you to minister the Lord's peace in a wide array of conflict situations. It will help prepare you to resolve not only significant material issues but also the complex personal issues that fuel human conflict.

Through this training you will learn skills essential for biblical conflict coaching and mediation (for a detailed overview of these topics, see Resolving Conflict through Christian Conciliation). These skills will serve you well as you talk casually over a cup of coffee with two conflicted friends or mediate a complicated church, ministry, or business dispute.

Our Reconciler Training Program is founded on our belief that Christ's death and resurrection is the means of all reconciliation, that God's Word provides powerful counsel that is relevant in all conflict, and that Christ's Church is the reconciling community in which and through which conflicts are best resolved.

Confused about how our training fits together? Make sure you read the Overview page to get the big picture.

After Completing the Reconciler Training Program

GETTING STARTED

Where do I start?

The Reconciler Training Program consists of two parts:
1) The Reconciler Self-Study Course and
2) Conflict Coaching Practicum or Mediation Practicum.

Therefore, to begin the Reconciler Training Program, you must complete the Reconciler Self-Study Course.

What is the Reconciler Self-Study Course?

The Reconciler Self-Study Course consists of two books (The Peacemaker by Ken Sande and Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands by Paul Tripp) plus the audio/video seminar Christian Conciliation Procedures. When you order the course, you also receive the Reconciler Self-Study Course Manual to assist you as you view or listen to the tapes as well as a CD containing a set of model case forms for your own reference.

How much does the Reconciler Self-Study Course cost?

It is $79 (plus shipping and handling) for the audio version (cassette or CD) or $135 for the video version (VHS). Click here to order now. However, church groups of 5 or more can receive special pricing.

Individual components:

  • Reconciler Self-Study Course Manual: $29.95 ($22.95/each for quantity orders of five or more Manuals purchased at one time)
  • The book The Peacemaker: $13.95
  • The book Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands: $16.99
  • Christian Conciliation Procedures (on Audio Cassettes): $35
  • Christian Conciliation Procedures (on CDs): $45
  • Christian Conciliation Procedures (on VHS Videos): $75
  • Model Case Forms: $9.00

Please call our Resource Department (800-711-7118) to receive quantity pricing or to order individual course components.

My friend has the tapes. I can borrow his manual and books, too, right?

No. We require each person (or each married couple) to own a personal copy of the Reconciler Self-Study Course Manual and the books The Peacemaker and Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands. When faced with guiding someone through conflict, you will need a resource, and you will most likely turn to your manual and/or books. Therefore, we want each person to have a copy of these resources for him/her self.

So, I can borrow the tapes, but not the manual and books?

Yes. We encourage church groups to use the tapes among those in the church that would like to participate in the Reconciler Training Program. To encourage churches to have many people receive training we offer group pricing.

I have the "old" version of the Reconciler Course. Can I still complete it for eligibility?

Yes, if you have completed the "The Peacemaker Seminar", "Christian Conciliation Procedures", and "Changing Hearts, Changing Lives" tape sets, you are eligible to attend a Practicum.

OK, I've completed the Reconciler Self-Study Course. Now what?

You are now eligible to attend one of the two live training events that are part of the Reconciler Training Program--the Conflict Coaching Practicum or the Mediation Practicum. To attend a practicum, you must own the Reconciler Self-Study Course Manual, have read The Peacemaker and Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands, and complete the Christian Conciliation Procedures audio/video seminar.

What's the difference between the Conflict Coaching Practicum and the Mediation Practicum? Which one is right for me to attend?

The Conflict Coaching Practicum teaches the skills needed to assist one of the parties involved in a conflict. This is normally a more informal situation (such as talking with a friend over a cup of coffee), and as such, this training is broadly applicable to all Christians who want to help others in conflict--both layperson, leader or professional.

The Mediation Practicum teaches the skills needed to lead a mediation where both parties involved in a conflict are present. While conflict coaching skills are definitely needed for mediation, mediation is often a more formal process. This process is especially helpful for church leaders as they respond to conflicts in their church. Also, since this process is foundational to our other advanced training, attending a Mediation Practicum is a prerequisite for those desiring to go on to the Certification Program.

For schedules, registration, and more specific information on these live training events, please follow the appropriate links above.

GENERAL QUESTIONS REGARDING LIVE TRAINING EVENTS

(This information applies to both the Conflict Coaching Practicum and the Mediation Practicum)

I don't know. Shouldn't my pastor be the person to go though this?

Yes, your pastors and church leadership should go through this training. However, all Christians are to make every effort to live at peace (Romans 12: 18, Eph. 4:3). We are all also encouraged to effectively judge and counsel the matters of conflict between brothers and sisters in Christ (1 Cor. 6:1-7). This is training for all Christians who have a heart to pursue genuine peace for the glory of God in all of our relationships.

Read about it: The Policeman who made Peace

Can I go to either practicum without first going through the Reconciler Self-Study Course?

No. The Reconciler Self-Study Course is the foundation for everything the instructors will teach you at both the Conflict Coaching Practicum and the Mediation Practicum, and the assumption is that every practicum attendee has completed the prerequisite course.

How long do the practicum training events last? When do they start and end?

Two days, from 8 am to approximately 6 pm. You will have approximately an hour for lunch each day, and there are frequent short breaks.

What is the exact location of the practicum I am thinking of attending?

Once you register for a practicum in a particular city, we will send you the relevant site information, including the exact location of the training.

Are there hotels that you recommend?

We will send accommodation recommendations to you after you register. These accommodations are based on the suggestions made by Peacemaker Ministries' contact in that area and are usually based on proximity to the practicum site and reasonable rates. Because Peacemaker Ministries does not usually qualify for group rates at the recommended hotels, we encourage all registrants to investigate hotel options thoroughly to secure the best value.

I really want 12 (or more) other people to go through this Program. That's pretty expensive!

We do offer price breaks for groups. The Reconciler Self-Study Course tapes can be shared by the whole group (we recommend obtaining the videotapes for groups.)

To complete the Reconciler Self-Study Course, each person needs a personal copy of The Peacemaker ($13.95), Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands ($16.99), and the Reconciler Self-Study Course Manual ($29.95). If there are 5 or more people ordering the Reconciler Self-Study Course Manual (sent to the same address) the price is $22.95/Manual.

You can contact the Reconciler Training Coordinator at Peacemaker Ministries to arrange a price agreement if bringing a group of 10 or more to a practicum. Price may be negotiable based on projected attendance numbers.

What if it's just me? Do you have financial assistance?

At this time, we do not have any scholarship funds available. We strongly encourage you to approach your church for financial support, as your training will directly assist and positively affect your local church.

I live in Manhattan, Montana. Will there be a Conflict Coaching Practicum or Mediation Practicum near me?

See the Conflict Coaching Practicum page and the Mediation Practicum page for the respective schedules of upcoming events.

There are no practicum events that are near me. Can my church host one?

We are happy to arrange for your church to host a training event! We do have attendance requirements, and therefore recommend that you talk to 3-5 other churches and pastors in the area that would be interested in this training as well. Also, we have facility requirements, so please email the Reconciler Training Coordinator if interested in hosting a practicum training event.

AFTER COMPLETING THE RECONCILER TRAINING PROGRAM

Wow! I just went to practicum and it was GREAT! Am I certified?

No, you have not completed the Certification Program. For information on that program, please click here.

I'm not certified? What am I?

You have been fully equipped to assist willing Christians in the church with their conflicts! The next step we recommend is that you and your church set up a reconciliation team at your church. This team will be able to conflict coach and mediate, and in doing so, will help your pastor by relieving some of the pressure of his counseling duties.

Reconciliation team? Where can I learn more about that?

We recommend that you read our booklet, "Transforming Your Church: Cultivating A Culture of Peace." You can also click here to read about how you and your church can implement a Culture of Peace™.

OK, so if I'm not certified, how can I become a Certified Christian Conciliator™?

Most of your questions can be answered by clicking here.

I don't want to be certified, but I have a heart for helping married couples in conflict. Do I have to sign up for certification to do that?

No. We have two other Advanced Training events: Intervening in Church Conflict, and Intervening in Marriage Conflict. Both of these events are available for Reconciler Training Program graduates to attend.

Please click here for more information on Advanced Training.
